January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month

More that 2.2 million Americans age 40 and older suffer from glaucoma. The scary thing is nearly half do not know they have it! In 2008, there were an estimated 42,000 cases of glaucoma in the state of Wisconsin. So what is Glaucoma? It is a disease that causes a gradual degeneration of cells that make up the optic nerve. Often, the loss of vision is unnoticeable until a significant amount of nerve damage has occurred. Any vision lost to glaucoma cannot be restored.

New technological advancements available in our office allow us to detect early signs of glaucoma before any vision impairment has occurred. If glaucoma is detected, most cases can be controlled and vision loss slowed or halted by treatment. Our doctors are trained and experienced in managing glaucoma cases. This is why we recommend yearly eye exams regardless of the need for glasses. Your eye health is very important to us and the only way we can make sure you'll have sight for the future is to come in today.
